2024

ANNUAL

REPORT

Message from the CEO

Since our founding, we set out to bring the power of data and technology to bear on the forces shaping the future of the ocean – from corporates to financial institutions to governments– to help steer a better course for ocean health. By delivering fit-for-purpose data and powerful tools that are grounded in science and cutting-edge technology, we enable sustainable decisions and impactful action for the ocean.

2024 was a landmark year for HUB Ocean with the public launch of our Ocean Data Platform (ODP). Built for data scientists, we are serving the needs of a growing user community – from ocean researchers and marine spatial planners to sustainability professionals within industry and finance. For them, the ODP is both a streamlined gateway to the world’s ocean data landscape and a powerful workspace for analysis and application. For us, it is the cornerstone of our mission to make ocean data – both public and private – more accessible, actionable and impactful through the ODP platform, its associated data catalog and our API first approach.

One of the biggest gaps in ocean knowledge stems from private sector data not being publicly shared. In October, we released our first Tides of Transparency report – a flagship effort to map the state of industrial ocean data sharing. Strikingly, we found that only 3% of the data in global biodiversity repositories originated from industry. That’s a staggering shortfall when you think of the scale of human activity out at sea and the vast data collection landscape that we know these industries have built.

But this year also brought hope, with leaders like TGS, Ecowende, and Aker BP stepping up to share data onto the Ocean Data Platform. Much of the ocean data generated by industry can be shared with science without real risk, and the benefits of greater transparency –like more credible transition plans and improved operational efficiency – are increasingly hard to ignore. Yet through our many interactions, it’s clear that managing ocean data remains a challenge for many company teams. In response, we’re launching Ocean Data Harmonized – a professional service to help ocean industries manage and share their data more effectively.

In 2024, we also started to ramp the development of our first data product that we called Ocean Sensitive Areas. As interest grows in understanding (ocean) nature-related pressures, dependencies and risks, we have set our sights on providing fit-for-purpose insights and metrics to enable more transparency and better decision-making. Indeed, it became clear that even when companies and financial institutions wanted to act, insights into where nature is in the ocean and how it interlocks with a company’s operations often remained frustratingly out of reach. This is the value that we will bring with the Ocean Sensitive Areas suite of data products.

Science is our most fundamental guide. Thanks to the researchers supporting us, we seek to jointly bridge good science with the pragmatism expected by industry, as we develop our Ocean Data Platform as a gateway for a complex ocean world. With a capable platform in place and a passionate team, we close 2024 ready to deliver much more value to the major “jobs to be done” for the ocean, particularly alongside philanthropic actors and with governments and NGO’s.

This year’s milestones fill me with pride, but I’m equally clear-eyed about where we need to go next. We’ll continue to amplify impact through unleashing the power of data in the decisive arenas, dismantling excuses for inaction and empowering the very forces (finance and government) that will compel industry to operate within planetary boundaries.

The ocean is the source of life on this planet. It has given us its best —and now it’s our turn to return the favor.

- Kimberly Mathisen, CEO

IMPACT

Driving Ocean Impact

In 2024, HUB Ocean strengthened its role as a catalyst for change - amplifying awareness and driving action on the urgent need for ocean data transparency and collaboration.

Tides of Transparency: A First Mapping of Industrial Ocean Data Sharing

Early in the year, we set out to answer a pivotal question: how much does the private sector contribute to our understanding of ocean biodiversity? The findings were eye-opening. Globally, only 3% of biodiversity data in public repositories originates from industry –though in some regions, contributions reach 50%, showing untapped potential.

Created in partnership with the Ocean Panel and the UN Ocean Decade Corporate Data Group, Tides of Transparency is a bold call to action. It outlines practical steps for companies to share data and highlights leaders already stepping up— Ecowende, Equinor, Aker BP, TGS, TotalEnergies, IKM, PTTEP, and Aker BioMarine. With 90% of marine species still unknown or poorly mapped, industrial data could unlock critical advances in ocean science and sustainable

Ocean Data Action Days

We used HUB Ocean’s very own Ocean Data Action Daya event to publish the report.

The Ocean Data Action Days, took place in Oslo on October 9-10, 2024, in Oslo, were a landmark event for HUB Ocean -- bringing together industry leaders, scientists, and policymakers to discuss the critical role of data in ocean sustainability. The event featured a series of insightful presentations and discussions on various topics, including the de-risking of offshore wind activities through data sharing, enriching open ocean data repositories with industrial data, and addressing legal aspects of industrial data sharing. Notable speakers included John Mitchell from The Crown Estate, Dick Schaap from Maris, and Thomas K. Svensen from BAHR, who shared their expertise and experiences in leveraging data for ocean sustainability

Amplifying our Reach

Major summits including the UN Ocean Decade Conference, the World Ocean Summit, COP 16 give HUB Ocean a platform to reach target audiences, work with partners and share our message. We were actively involved at all three conferences – speaking at events and engaging with key networks to ensure the ocean was on top of the agenda. Over the course of the financial year, 8 different spokespeople from HUB Ocean spoke about our platforms, data and tools at over --- events and webinars

Industrial Data Sharing

Unlocking data held by industry is one of the most powerful ways to accelerate ocean science, innovation, and sustainability. In 2024, HUB Ocean made major strides in this space—proving that open data can benefit both the planet and business.

Boosting Efficiency & Ocean Science with TGS

In 2024, TGS, a global leader in energy data, merged with PGS—creating a new data powerhouse. A long-time supporter of ocean health and UN SDG 14, TGS has been quietly contributing valuable marine data to institutions like IMR, SF Harvest, and Seabed 2030 for years.

This year, they took it further. In partnership with HUB Ocean, TGS opened up 15 years of ocean data—everything from marine mammal sightings to salinity and current profiles. HUB Ocean transformed this massive dataset to meet FAIR standards, unlocking its potential for science, innovation, and operational efficiency. It's a milestone in how open data can drive better decisions—both for the planet and business.

Pioneering Open Data Sharing & Strengthening Competitiveness with Ecowende

Ecowende, a pioneering joint venture between Shell, Eneco, and Chubu, is reimagining what it means to build nature-positive offshore wind. Their wind farm at Hollandse Kust West VI, set to launch in 2026, incorporates ecological design features like bird corridors, biodegradable reef structures, and quieter installation methods.

But they’re not just building smarter—they’re sharing smarter too. Ecowende is collecting and sharing an expansive dataset covering birds, bats, fish, sound, and seabed life—across all phases of development onto the Ocean Data Platform and other public repositories. With HUB Ocean, Cognite, and Accenture, they’re creating next-generation data infrastructure to make this information open, accessible, and actionable—accelerating both marine science and responsible development.

Open by design in Norway

Aker BP continued advancing its open data philosophy by sharing key metocean datasets from its offshore operations through HUB Ocean. These datasets are already drawing interest from meteorological institutions and modelers, who note their value for improving ocean forecasting and climate modeling efforts.

Leading the Ocean Data Action Coalition with Microsoft and Accenture

Through the High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy’s Ocean Data Action Coalition (ODAC), which aims to achieve 100% mapped and managed ocean in national jurisdictions by 2030, we are driving transformative change by fostering increased industrial data sharing. In 2024, HUB Ocean and Microsoft welcomed a third co-leader into the coalition with Accenture.
