If you spend time out at sea, or around the coast, we need your help

The ocean is vast, much of it unseen and undocumented. HUB Ocean manage the largest open-source ocean database, which is used by experts, scientists and organisations to plan and manage our oceans better and ultimately improve ocean health.

But there are large gaps in our data, which is why we need YOU to be our eyes on the ocean.

By downloading the Citizen Sea app, you will be able to contribute by photographing, uploading and logging sightings of marine wildlife or marine pollution.

About Citizen Sea

Citizen Sea is a new, innovative mobile app that enables anyone out at sea or along the coast to contribute marine sightings directly from their phones.

By participating, you join the world's largest citizen science project committed to enhancing ocean health.

Your observations play a vital role in creating the most comprehensive crowd-sourced dataset focused on marine species and ocean pollution.

We are calling on seafarers from diverse industries and communities worldwide to help us accurately assess the health of our ocean.

The global shipping fleet employs over 1.8 million people and 15% of the world’s population live by the coast. This is a huge untapped source of data gatherers. We want them to be our eyes and ears on the ocean - citizen scientists for the sea.

How it works

Keep a lookout for either marine wildlife or marine pollution, take a picture and upload it using the app to the HUB Ocean database.

We need your help to gather two specific types of sightings:

  • Marine wildlife - such as whales, dolphins, seabirds, fish or sharks.

  • Marine pollution - such as debris, oil spills, plastics, old nets or submerged containers.

Simply upload your photos through the app and tag them with relevant observations. Your phone’s photos contain location metadata, enabling our team to pinpoint the exact location of your sightings. We will then integrate your contributions into our expanding database.

Why take part

Your sightings and observations are crucial for enhancing our database and closing the critical gaps in ocean data.

Your uploads will seamlessly feed into the Hub Ocean platform - the world’s largest open-source database - utilized by thousands of experts dedicated to improving our ocean’s health.

Join the crew!

The app will provide clear signals to the world on ocean health. It will enrich the data on the HUB Ocean Platform which in turn will inform policy, academia and industry.
