A springboard for the continued digitization of Norwegian Aquaculture

Today, the Norwegian Seafood Federation and HUB Ocean formally launched the new Salmon Lice app. Fish health personnel call it “a dream come true.”

After a crucial phase of planning, strategizing, and implementing, the Salmon Lice data shared openly through Sjømatdata is now available on the Ocean Data Platform through the “Lusedata” app. The Ocean Data Platform is at the heart of what HUB Ocean offers to the world.

“For many fish health personnel, this is a dream come true. The Salmon Lice Data app is a springboard for our continued digitization. It will solve a considerable challenge for Norway’s second-largest export product, which is the challenge of salmon lice,” - said Jon Arne Grøttum, leader of OPS Sjømat and director of the Norwegian Seafood Federation.

The Norwegian aquaculture sector is now sharing data from more than 1000 production locations on the Ocean Data Platform. The Platform enriches the salmon lice data with other relevant ocean data in the platform. It utilizes the power in the ODP to provide an easier user interface. The Salmon Lice data project addresses preventative and active measures against the Sea Lice issue in the seafood industry.

“The industry has shared data for many years, but we still have a lot to learn about what works. Making this data readily available, easily accessible, and interpretable reduces the time fish health personnel spends gathering the data,” said Karoline Skaar Amthor, Head of Environment and Health in the Norwegian Seafood Federation.

Thereby allowing time to focus on preventive measures against sea lice to keep lice levels as low as possible through the production cycle.

Kimberly Mathisen

“The Salmon Lice Data App is a great example of what we have set out to do with our Ocean Data Platform. And that is gathering large amounts of data and making it easily accessible to provide new insight for science-based decision making. One of our goals is to help provide more blue food to the world. Contributing to improving fish health and reducing fish death is an important first step on this path,” said Kimberly Mathisen, CEO of HUB Ocean.

The Salmon Lice Data App is the first step on a path leading to sharing more data from Norwegian Aquaculture. At a later stage, data sets from fisheries, for instance, will also be shared. Sjømatdata, through OPS Sjømat, and HUB Ocean will together work in defining more projects which contribute to their common purpose. These projects will be open to others wishing to join

About OPS Sjømat

OPS Sjømat is a collaboration between Norwegian Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries, the Norwegian Seafood Federation, and the Norwegian Seafood Association. OPS Sjømat’s mission is, through collaboration and digitalization, to increase sustainability and profitability in the Norwegian seafood industry.

About Sjømatdata

The sector platform is called Sjømatdata and is a non-profit organization owned by seafood industry organizations. Sjømatdata has a sole purpose: simple and secure sharing of data within the seafood industry.

About HUB Ocean

The foundation HUB Ocean aims to connect people, data, and technology to pilot and support new data-driven solutions for better ocean management. The flagship product of the foundation is the Ocean Data Platform. The Ocean Data Platform contains oceanographic and maritime data from industry, governments, science, and the public. The independent technology foundation HUB Ocean and the organization OPS sjømat have the same important goal: making ocean data more easily accessible for industry, authorities, and academia.
