Using the Ocean Data Platform to study and boost marine protections in Kenya
Goal: Use spatial search to find Marine Protected Areas (MPA) data.
Task: Search data from Protected Seas, extract MPA polygon and explore how to save it to “My Data.”
FIND DATA
Goal: Explore and filter data in the catalog
Task: Find a dataset and use the explore table function, then filter based geometry and/or other fields of interest.
EXPLORE DATA
INTEGRATE IN YOUR LOCAL GIS
Goal: Explore data from ODP directly in your local QGIS or ArcGIS environment
Goal: Experience how easy it is to upload data to ODP.
Task: Add a tabular dataset—this could be:
Something you just downloaded from ODP catalog
A csv with geometry extracted from a scientific paper (e.g., Karisa et al. 2020). Link here
UPLOAD DATA
ANALYZE IN WORKSPACE
Goal: Dive deeper into your data using ODP’s compute capabilities.
Task: Calculate the total area of coral habitat within the MPA.
Bonus: Try mapping your data to H3 polygons and visualizing the results.
